Static Grass 2 mm in length will work. Longer static grass needs to be cut to scale length.
The grass fibres can be coloured to emulate fresh and older brownish dried needles.

white pine needles are 6 (2.36 in) to 12 (4.72 in) centimetres long
2 mm static grass is 2.74 in long
4 mm is 5.48 in which is a relational scale for White Pine
2 mm static grass is the optimum length for the majority of coniferous species with the exception of Ceder.
